What to see and do in Espejón

Espejón
Village
Espejón is a town of 122 inhabitants in the Tierras del Burgo district, in the province of Soria, whose name derives from the Latin specula or speculum, tower or watchtower, a role it played together with other nearby villages to watch over the Roman city of Clunia. Before the arrival of Rome, it was border land between the Arévaci, who eventually came to dominate it, and the Pelendones of the north of the province; on the El Castillo hill are preserved the remains of a watchtower that watched over Clunia between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century. Its inhabitants have traditionally lived from stonemasonry and timber; the communally owned pine forest distributes its profits among the descendants of the former comuneros, and since the 18th century the pilgrimage of Nuestra Señora de Berezales has been held at Pentecost.
The bloodstone jasper of Espejón
Curiosity
The red limestone veined from these quarries was the most prized Spanish ornamental stone of the sixteenth century. It was carved for the cathedrals of Toledo, Burgos and Segovia, for El Escorial and for the Royal Palace of Madrid.
The reopening of the jasper quarries
Historical milestone
Worked already in Roman times and abandoned after the fall of the Empire, the quarries were opened again at the beginning of the sixteenth century to supply ornamental stone for the great works of the monarchy and of the Church.
