La Gallega
Village
La Gallega is a Burgos hamlet of 34 inhabitants, in the Demanda y Pinares comarca, whose residents are called galleganos, in a mountainous and wooded area, softened by the course of the Lobos river, along which passes the Castilian-Aragonese Way of Saint James. Documented since 1211 as a hostel called El Galego, in 1217 the hospital of San Miguel de Gallego is recorded here, on the pilgrim route from Zaragoza to Santiago via Soria, Silos and Burgos. In 1175 King Alfonso VIII granted a knight the farm of Peña Aguda, later donated to the abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos and ceded in perpetual lease to the council of La Gallega. On the last Saturday of May the village climbs in pilgrimage to the hermitage of the Virgin of Peñaguda.
