Pinilla de los Barruecos
Village
Pinilla de los Barruecos is a municipality in the province of Burgos, in the comarca of La Demanda y Pinares, with 100 inhabitants divided between the provincial seat village and the second settlement, Gete, on mountainous, wooded terrain of around two thousand hectares of pine, savin and oak, with the Peñas de Cervera to the north and El Cerro to the south; in its territory rises the Lobos river, which gives its name to the Cañón del Río Lobos. It was resettled in the 10th century by the counts of Lara and of Castile, and its name, a diminutive of peña (crag), alludes to the watchtower that used to stand on these heights, while “barruecos,” of Celtic or Iberian origin, denotes the cluster of crags that abound in the area. It is held to be the only village in the comarca that still raises the May tree in the traditional way, with an old cart.
