What to see and do in Aldealseñor

Aldealseñor
Village
Aldealseñor is a town of 29 inhabitants in the comarca of Almarza, in the province of Soria, of which there is already word in the 1270 census of Alfonso X the Wise. It preserves a fortified house of the Salcedo family restored by the architect and cartoonist Peridis: a 10th-century defensive tower on which a 16th-century palace grew up, the work of the master builder Martín de Solano; it has had proceedings open since 1980 for listing as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in the monument category. It also preserves the church of Nuestra Señora de la Blanca, of Romanesque origin with some pre-Romanesque pieces and remodelled in the 16th century, and the ermita de San José, next to the palace. In Aldealseñor the documentary El cielo gira (2004), by Mercedes Álvarez, was filmed, about the reality of a small village of depopulated rural Spain.
The tower-palace of Aldealseñor
Monument
Built between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, it dominates the houses of a village whose name means literally the lord's hamlet and which is already mentioned in the census ordered by Alfonso X the Wise in 1270.
The fortified house of the Salcedo family
Monument
It preserves a 10th-century defensive tower and a 16th-century palatial block designed by the master Martín de Solano; it has been a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (Spain's heritage designation in force between 1931 and 1985) since 1980 and is the municipality's greatest monument.
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Blanca
Monument
A church of Romanesque origin that preserves pre-Romanesque elements and was remodelled in the sixteenth century; its invocation gives its name to the village's main festival, held in mid-August alongside that of San Roque.
The hermitage of San José
Monument
Attached to the palace complex and rehabilitated in recent years, it completes a heritage out of all proportion for a municipality that today barely exceeds twenty registered households.
The first mention in 1270
Historical milestone
The village appears in the census ordered by Alfonso X the Wise; the count of taxpayers of 1528 attributed thirty-eight households to it and the census of 1842 came to record 248 inhabitants.

Curiosity
Director Mercedes Álvarez filmed this documentary here in 2004 about the village where she was born, a portrait of Spain's rural depopulation that was awarded prizes at festivals worldwide. The editor of José Luis Guerín's feature film En construcción, Álvarez returned to her roots to observe the extinction of a village that had reached four hundred inhabitants at the start of the century and had only fourteen left at the time of filming, the last heirs of a thousand years of unbroken history. The film, starring residents such as Antonino Martínez, José Fernández and Silvano García, won the best film award at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2005 and the grand prize of the 27th Cinéma du réel International Festival in Paris, as well as a medal from the Círculo de Escritores Cinematográficos.
The Virgen de la Blanca and San Mateo
Activity
The village celebrates the Virgen de la Blanca and San Roque on 15 and 16 August, and gathers again on 12 September for San Mateo, two dates that multiply the population.
