What to see and do in Almajano

Almajano
Village
Almajano is a village in the comarca of Almarza, in the province of Soria, with 179 inhabitants in an area of barely ten square kilometres. Near the town, on the Monte de la Atalaya, there was a Roman camp from which the attack on Numancia was launched, and in 1430 the place was the setting for the truce of Majano, which ended the war between the crowns of Castile and Aragon. It preserves the Gothic church of San Andrés Apóstol, from the 16th century, remodelled in the 18th, with its tower enlarged in 1910 to house the bell and the clock; inside, the main altarpiece stands out. In the village square stands the fortified house of the Salcedo family, also from the 16th century, surrounded by a crenellated wall with round arches and the family coat of arms above the door.
The church of San Andrés Apóstol
Monument
A sixteenth-century Gothic fabric remodelled in the eighteenth, it holds a valuable altarpiece as its main artistic treasure; it presides over a village that in the mid-nineteenth century had some ninety houses.
The fortified house of Almajano
Monument
A sixteenth-century seigneurial stronghold built by the Salcedo family, finished with battlements; along with the eighteenth-century hermitage of La Soledad and the washing place, it completes the village's heritage.
The truce of Majano
Historical milestone
In this place was signed in 1430 the truce between the crowns of Castile and Aragon that put an end to one of the wars between the two kingdoms; the village's old name, Majano, remained tied to the agreement.
The Roman camp of La Atalaya
Curiosity
On the La Atalaya hill, above the village, a Roman camp has been documented, one more of those that ringed Celtiberian territory in the centuries of the conquest of the meseta.
The late August festivities
Activity
On the last weekend of August the village honours the Virgen del Rosario and San Esteban with processions, traditional music and fireworks, the date that brings together its 179 households and those who emigrated.
The streams of la Cebollera
Nature
The municipal district, of less than ten square kilometres at 1,054 metres of altitude, is crossed by the Monigón and Merdaneta streams, which come down from the Sierra Cebollera among tilled fields, grassland and small patches of woodland.
