What to see and do in Carrascosa de la Sierra

Carrascosa de la Sierra
Village
Carrascosa de la Sierra is a town in the comarca of Almarza, in the north of the province of Soria, on the banks of the río Chico, a tributary of the Merdancho, in the shadow of the Piedra de la Mina and the sierra del Rodadero; it has 19 inhabitants. Its origin is possibly to be placed in the 16th century, as some inscriptions carved in stone indicate, but it was revived in the 18th century when herders from the Real Concejo de la Mesta settled there, building the solid stone houses that give the village its character today; among them, Manuel del Río Alcalde was born there in 1757, author of the book "Vida Pastoril". On its territory, included in the Natura 2000 network within the Oncala-Valtajeros area, it is still possible to see wolves in the wild, and the Cañada Real Soriana Oriental crosses it.
The dolmen of Alto de la Tejera
Nature
Discovered in 1985, it has a circular chamber 3.80 metres across formed by six large blocks and is considered unique in the province; it served as a burial place four or five thousand years ago.
The Romanesque font of San Juan Bautista
Monument
The parish church preserves a Romanesque font with a circular base and a truncated conical bowl decorated with a carved rope, the oldest piece in a church that presides over the village.
The clock tower
Monument
In the square stands a tower with a bell and stone numerals carved on its face, an uncommon solution in the villages of the sierra and a symbol of the eighteenth-century prosperity from livestock.
The sheep-counting pen and the old jail
Curiosity
The village preserves its communal fittings almost intact: the old jail, the pillory, the sheep-counting pen, the communal kitchen, the schools, the forge, the fountain and the washing place, the complete furniture of a stock-rearing council.
The abolition of the Mesta
Historical milestone
The village's solid houses were raised in the eighteenth century by stockmen of the Honrado Concejo de la Mesta; the institution's dissolution in 1836 sank the wool trade and with it the local economy.
The wolves of Oncala-Valtajeros
Nature
The municipal district includes 119 hectares of this site of community importance, through which wolves still move freely; the climate is harsh, with winters that drop below ten degrees under zero.
San Juan and the Rosario
Activity
The village celebrates San Juan Bautista on 24 June, its popular festivities on the second weekend of August and Nuestra Señora del Rosario on the first weekend of October, three dates for nineteen households.
