What to see and do in La Fregeneda

La Fregeneda
Village
La Fregeneda is a village in the comarca of Vitigudino, in the sub-comarca of El Abadengo, with around 296 inhabitants, situated at the confluence of the Duero and Águeda rivers, on the border with Portugal and within the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. Its name, documented as “La Frexeneda”, comes from the Leonese “fresneda”, or ash grove, like other plant-derived place names in the area, for example Cerezal de Peñahorcada, El Manzano or Moral de Sayago. The municipal area spans a wide difference in elevation, from the 595 m of the Alto de la Divisa down to the 133 m of the river wharf of Vega Terrón, the lowest point in the whole of Castile and León and one of the most attractive spots in the park, together with the so-called Camino de Hierro, the route of the old railway to Portugal.
Church of San Marcos Evangelista de La Fregeneda
Monument
Church begun in the 16th century and concluded in the 18th, in which late Gothic and Baroque are mixed. It presides over a village of fewer than three hundred residents looking out over Las Arribes, whose coat of arms displays three flowering almond trees argent.
The Iron Road of La Fregeneda
Curiosity
To cross Las Arribes, the railway stretch between La Fregeneda and Barca de Alba needed twenty tunnels and a dozen bridges excavated and laid over the precipice. The line was opened in 1887 and closed in 1985; today it is walked on foot.
