Hinojosa de Duero
Village
Hinojosa de Duero is a town of around 562 inhabitants in the comarca of Vitigudino, in the sub-comarca of El Abadengo, in the province of Salamanca, part of whose territory lies within the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. Settlement here dates back to the Neolithic, with dolmens at the Nava del Río, Vettone castros at Moncalvo and la Escala, and Roman remains in the necropolis of the Cabeza de San Pedro. Resettled by the Kingdom of León from the 11th century onwards, the hermitage of the Santísimo Cristo de la Misericordia, from the 13th century, survives as a testimony of that era. Granted to the Order of the Temple in the 12th century, in the 14th it became the Marquisate of Hinojosa, from which the townspeople freed themselves in the 15th century, a feat commemorated by the Dance of the Flag. Its economy today revolves around Arribes de Salamanca cheese.
