Saucelle
Village
Saucelle is a village in the province of Salamanca, in the Vitigudino district and the La Ribera sub-district, in the Arribes del Duero, very close to the border with Portugal. It was founded by the León kings in the Middle Ages and ceded by Alfonso IX of León to the Order of Santiago at the end of the 12th century. Between 1950 and 1956 the dam that bears its name was built, eight kilometres away, inaugurated by Francisco Franco in 1956, next to the workers' settlement of Salto de Saucelle. With about 242 inhabitants, it is one of the most visited villages in the Arribes del Duero, with viewpoints, hostels and rural tourism. Its parish church keeps an Immaculate Conception carved in the round by the Granada sculptor Pedro de Mena.
