What to see and do in Lumbrales

Lumbrales
Village
Lumbrales is the capital of the sub-comarca of El Abadengo, in the comarca of Vitigudino, with around 1,507 inhabitants and part of its territory within the Arribes del Duero Nature Park. Its name may derive from the Leonese llume or the Spanish lumbre (fire/light), or from the Latin limen, border, from which its original name would come, Santa María de Liminares, under which it is already recorded in 1175. In a meander of the río Camaces lies the Vettone castro of Las Merchanas, 8.5 hectares inhabited from the 2nd century BC to the 5th century AD, with its stone verraco and today one of the area's biggest tourist draws; the Casa de los Condes houses the Territorio Vetón centre. The 1297 Treaty of Alcañices, between Castile-León and Portugal, proved key to the town's history.
Hillfort of las Merchanas
Nature
Eight and a half hectares of fortified settlement on a granite promontory in a meander of the river Camaces, inhabited from the 2nd century before Christ to the middle of the 5th century of our era. It lies inside the natural park of Arribes del Duero.
The verracos of Las Merchanas
Curiosity
From the castro come two Vettonian zoomorphic sculptures popularly known as the Verraco of Las Merchanas and the Donkey of La Barrera. Like the rest of the verracos of the border, they are interpreted as markers of pastures and protectors of livestock.
The fire of Lumbrales
Historical milestone
In 1647, during the Portuguese War of Restoration, the Portuguese governor of Beira crossed the border and burned the town. It was one of the many blows suffered by these frontier villages between 1640 and 1668, and one from which Lumbrales took decades to recover.
