What to see and do in Ahigal de los Aceiteros

Ahigal de los Aceiteros
Village
Ahigal de los Aceiteros is a village on the border with Portugal, with about 93 inhabitants, in the sub-comarca of El Abadengo, comarca of Vitigudino, province of Salamanca, with part of its territory within the Arribes del Duero nature reserve. Its name comes from the Leonese 'la figal', 'the fig tree'. Founded during the medieval Leonese repopulation, it was integrated into the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo in the 12th century. In the late Middle Ages it came under the dependence of the House of Alba, until on July 5, 1851 the Supreme Court exempted this locality and other neighboring ones from the Noveno tribute, freeing them from vassalage. Its church, from the 17th century, holds a Baroque altarpiece by Felipe Cervera, a disciple of Churriguera, and every May 11 the festival of El Noveno recalls that ruling.

Monument
The church of Santa María Magdalena, of the 17th century, holds a beautiful Baroque altarpiece of the beginning of the 18th, the work of Felipe Cervera, a disciple of Churriguera. An unexpected luxury in a village of the border that today does not reach a hundred inhabitants.
The oil of the arribes
Food and drink
The village's surname does not deceive: among its historic productions figured oil, alongside wheat, rye and honey. The microclimate of Las Arribes allows the olive grove where the plateau does not permit it, and its oils preserve a marked fruity character.
