Sobradillo
Village
Sobradillo is a town of about 170 inhabitants in the El Abadengo sub-district, Vitigudino district, in the northwest of Salamanca, on the same border with Portugal, 105 kilometres from the capital. Its name may derive from the Leonese "sofrero" (cork oak), that is, "small cork oak grove", although it has also been linked to the Galician and Leonese place names "Sobrado". The keep, a remnant of the 12th-century castle remodelled in the 15th century with the coats of arms of the Rodríguez de Ledesma family, is today one of the visitor centres of the Arribes del Duero natural park, within whose boundaries the whole municipality lies, and serves as an interpretation centre for the area. Settlement goes back to the Neolithic, the period of the now-vanished dolmen of La Nava Cardosa.
