Almendra reservoir and dam Nature · Almendra, Vitigudino, Salamanca The Almendra dam, also known as the Villarino hydroelectric plant, stands on the lower course of the río Tormes, 5 kilometres from the Salamanca town of Almendra and 7 from Cibanal in Zamora province, on the stretch known as the arribes of the Tormes, a deep gorge formed by the river's erosion. Built between 1963 and 1970, at 202 metres high it is the tallest dam in Spain; its reservoir, of 2,649 cubic hectometres, is the third largest by capacity in the country and has created an inland sea in the middle of the dry Charro farmland. It is part of the Saltos del Duero system, together with the Aldeadávila, Castro, Ricobayo, Saucelle and Villalcampo plants; from its viewpoints, beside the busiest road between Salamanca and Zamora, wide views of the arribes can be seen.
