What to see and do in Ahigal de Villarino

Ahigal de Villarino
Village
Ahigal de Villarino is a hamlet in the sub-comarca of La Ramajería, in Vitigudino, with around 30 inhabitants across 24 km², one of the lowest population densities in the province, at 1.24 inhabitants/km². Its name comes from the Leonese “la figal”, the fig tree, documented as Figal in 1265; over time the article merged with the name, giving rise to Ahigal. Resettled in the Middle Ages by the kings of León, it was placed under the jurisdiction of Ledesma and, after this was reorganised into “rodas”, became part of the Roda de Villarino, from which the second part of its name derives. In the mid-19th century, when it had 138 inhabitants, the village still had a palace of the counts of Ledesma.
