What to see and do in Monleras

Monleras
Village
Monleras is a village in the comarca of the Tierra de Ledesma, in the province of Salamanca, with a single population centre, 241 inhabitants and an altitude of 757 metres. Popular tradition derives its name from the old Molineras, after the number of mills it had and the women who tended them; one of them has been restored and can be visited, next to some old wash-houses. Ferdinand II of León handed it over in the 12th century to the bishop of Zamora. The building of the Almendra reservoir in the sixties sank beneath its waters an iron bridge and several stone bridges that linked Monleras with the Zamoran villages of Sayago, among them Carbellino, leaving the locality isolated; today the reservoir allows sport fishing and other water activities.
The mill of las Molineras
Monument
The village's name comes from the Latin molinarias, the weirs that diverted the water towards the mills. One of those mills has been restored and can be visited, and beside the watercourse the old washing places are preserved.

Nature
At the confluence of the Tormes with the Villar stream stood a castro on a hill of difficult access, a sibling of those of Yecla de Yeltes or Saldeana. Today its remains and its layer of black earth with ceramics were flooded by the Almendra reservoir.
