What to see and do in Sotoserrano

Sotoserrano
Village
Sotoserrano, also called El Soto, is a municipality of the Sierra de Francia, in the province of Salamanca, set within the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia nature reserve at the confluence of the ríos Alagón, Cuerpo de Hombre and Francia; at 508 metres of altitude, it is the lowest-lying village in the province, with a mild climate all year round, which allows orange and cherry trees to be grown alongside the vine and the olive. Its town centre preserves the Barrio and the Plaza del Castillo, with its clock tower, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the hermitage of the Humilladero. With around 498 inhabitants, it looks out over the Melero meander, traced by the río Alagón on the provincial boundary. On 31 August it performs La Loa, heir to the autos sacramentales.
The meander of El Melero
Nature
South of the village, the river Alagón describes an extremely tight meander that marks the boundary between Salamanca and Cáceres and encloses the island of Romerosa, within the municipal district. The best view is obtained from the viewpoint of La Antigua, already in the lands of Cáceres.
La Loa and the Judas
Activity
On 31 August La Loa is performed, a theatrical piece descended from the autos sacramentales that stages the struggle between good and evil. In Semana Santa the young men hang a straw figure in the square, the Judas, which on Easter Monday is tossed and burned.
