Herguijuela de la Sierra
Village
Herguijuela de la Sierra is a municipality of about 222 inhabitants in the Sierra de Francia comarca, province of Salamanca, situated within the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia nature park. Its name is recorded in 1188 as Ecclesiola, “little church” in Latin, and that same year King Alfonso IX of León granted the locality, already resettled, to the archbishopric of Santiago de Compostela. In the mid-19th century it had 619 inhabitants, almost three times as many as today. Miguel de Unamuno mentioned the village in a poem from his Cancionero dated 1928.
Ecclesiola, the little church
Curiosity
The village appears as Ecclesiola in 1188 and as Ecclesia in 1215: its name is the Latin diminutive of church and could allude to the small Early Christian and Visigothic oratories. It preserves its traditional mountain architecture well.
