What to see and do in Miranda del Castañar

Miranda del Castañar
Village
Miranda del Castañar is a Salamanca town of about 361 inhabitants, at 649 metres above sea level in the Sierra de Francia, which arose in the 12th century with the Hospitaller Order of Jerusalem and was consolidated when Alfonso IX of León made it a town and concejo in 1213, acting from then on as the administrative capital of the comarca. In 1423 John II granted it to Pedro de Zúñiga, and in 1457 Henry IV created for his son the county of Miranda, which passed to the House of Alba in the 19th century. It has belonged, since 2017, to the association of the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain. It preserves the Zúñiga castle and celebrates the procession of the oil lamps in September.

The capital of the Sierra de Francia
Historical milestone
Alfonso IX of León made Miranda del Castañar a villa and concejo in 1213 and its administrative capital of the Sierra de Francia: for centuries most of the sierra's villages depended on its alfoz. In 1423 King John II granted the town to Pedro de Zúñiga, and in 1457 Henry IV created a county title in favour of his son, Diego López de Zúñiga, which consolidated the family's lordship over the territory.

Activity
The festivals of the Virgen de la Cuesta, from 7 to 10 September, open at dusk with the procession of the oil lamps, led by a tabor player, the «bobo de la danza» and the «mocina del ramo». It was declared a festival of regional tourist interest in 2017.
