What to see and do in Colmenar de Montemayor

Colmenar de Montemayor
Village
Colmenar de Montemayor is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of the Sierra de Béjar, with about 175 inhabitants, located on the foothills of the sierra, where the Cuerpo de Hombre and Sangusín rivers have carved large canyons through granite and slate; its highest point is the cerro Felipe, at about 925 metres. Its name recalls the beehives that once abounded in the area, while the surname "de Montemayor" comes from the council of Montemayor del Río, created by Alfonso IX of León around 1227, into which it was incorporated after the medieval repopulation. It preserves the church of la Asunción, dated between the 13th and 14th centuries, and among its buildings the Casa del Hidalgo and the Casa del Chantre stand out, both from the 17th century.
The House of the Chantre
Monument
On the main square stands this seventeenth-century house built by Juan Sánchez Grande de Antequera, canon of the cathedral of Coria and founder of the village's chaplaincy; its chimney and the coat of arms flanked by two stone inscriptions stand out.
The execution of the schoolteacher
Historical milestone
The settlement's schoolmaster, Melquiades Rodríguez Tocino, was abducted and shot on 8 August 1936 accused of being a red, although the village was not a war front. In August 2012 the town council dedicated a commemorative plaque to him.
