What to see and do in Cepeda

Cepeda
Village
Cepeda is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the comarca of the Sierra de Francia, set on a broad, sheltered valley, its houses clustered on a hillock that gives it a peculiar look, unique in the sierra; in local speech the village is called Cepea. It is crossed by the río Francia, a tributary of the Alagón, and by the arroyo del Coso, and its surroundings bring together woods of oak, chestnut and strawberry trees alongside vineyards, olive groves and orchards. Inhabited since ancient times, it sits on a pre-Roman hillfort next to a Roman road of which an altar and a few columns remain, and was later a land of Moors and Jews. With around 287 inhabitants, inscriptions left by converts can be read on the lintels of its houses, and the so-called Casa de los Judíos stands in ruins.
The church and tower of Cepeda
Monument
The church was begun in the sixteenth century and continued into the eighteenth, with Baroque predominating and a seventeenth-century altarpiece by the joiner Ambrosio de Villalobos. The tower, freestanding and from the seventeenth century, served to summon the residents by the ringing of the bell.
The town bought for 3,500 ducats
Historical milestone
Part of the county of Miranda and under that town's tutelage, Cepeda won its jurisdictional independence in 1640 by paying 3,500 ducats. Its muleteers carried along the roads the wine, honey, wax and flax produced here.
