What to see and do in Mogarraz

Mogarraz
Village
Mogarraz is a town in the Sierra de Francia comarca, in the province of Salamanca, formed of a single settlement of just over nine square kilometres. It has 236 inhabitants and was declared a historic site in 1998, with a medieval urban layout of narrow streets and an irregular plan; since 2014 it has featured among the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain. Its founding goes back to the medieval resettlement by the Leonese kings, and in 1213 it was included in the alfoz of Miranda del Castañar, created by Alfonso IX. From its façades hang the portraits of 388 residents who did not emigrate in the 1960s, each on the house they lived in, an exhibition through which the town has “brought back to life” their faces.

Monument
Declared a historic ensemble on 12 February 1998, the town preserves a medieval layout and façades of mountain timber framing filled with masonry, with symbols carved in the stone of the lintels and balconies projecting over the street.

Curiosity
The village has «brought back to life» the faces of 388 residents who did not emigrate in the sixties: their portraits hang on the façade of the house each of them lived in, so that the former inhabitants look out at the visitor from the walls of the town.
