What to see and do in Pitiegua

Pitiegua
Village
Pitiegua is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, in the comarca of La Armuña, where the Nava Grande site attests human presence as early as Roman times. Founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, it was placed within the quarter of Armuña in the jurisdiction of Salamanca, and in 1877 its halt on the Salamanca-Medina del Campo railway line began operating. In November 1812 the Duke of Wellington lodged in the village and dated several letters of the Peninsular War here. With about 173 inhabitants, it preserves the church of San Miguel Arcángel, of Mudéjar design and 12th- and 13th-century origin, and celebrates its festivals on 29 September, the saint's day, and 20 January, San Sebastián.

The Mudéjar church of San Miguel Arcángel
Monument
The church of San Miguel Arcángel in Pitiegua stands to the north of the town centre; its original construction dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and followed Mudéjar lines, although successive renovations substantially altered its appearance. Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico, from 1849, already describes it as a parish church served by a cura de término. The Roman site of Nava Grande is also documented within the municipal boundary, evidence that the place was inhabited in Roman times before Pitiegua was founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages; centuries later, in November 1812, the Duke of Wellington lodged in the village during the Peninsular War.
