What to see and do in Villaverde de Guareña

Villaverde de Guareña
Village
Villaverde de Guareña is a municipality in the comarca of La Armuña, in Salamanca, whose territory includes the village itself and the hamlet of Cañadilla. Founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, it was called Speola until, on 2 July 1916, it took its present surname, from the Guareña stream that runs a few metres from the settlement. In 1480 the Catholic Monarchs granted its residents a privilege, recorded in the so-called codex of Villaverde de Guareña, which exempted them from providing carts and animals for the troops and from being conscripted for war. Madoz described it in the mid-19th century as having a hundred houses and ninety-two residents who grew wheat, rye and barley. It has 128 inhabitants today.
The church of San Cornelio y San Cipriano
Monument
The church of San Cornelio y San Cipriano, in Villaverde de Guareña, in the Salamancan comarca of La Armuña, is dedicated to two saints uncommon in the area and was declared a site of cultural interest on 29 July 1993. Its construction began in the late 15th or early 16th century: it has a single nave that narrows towards the chancel, with a tower at the foot and an attached sacristy, in three bays with round arches. The nave's roof is of timber with two slopes, and the chancel displays a polychrome coffered ceiling, with double tie-beams and chamfered corners. The building, of ashlar and rubble masonry, opens to the south through a doorway with an eaves canopy, round arch and pediment. Madoz described in 1845 a village of one hundred single-storey houses and ninety-two inhabitants.
The stream that gave the surname
Curiosity
On 2 July 1916 the settlement changed its official name from Villaverde to Villaverde de Guareña, taking the name of a small stream, a tributary of the Guareña, that runs a few metres from the houses.
