What to see and do in Gomecello

Gomecello
Village
Gomecello is a municipality in the Salamanca comarca of La Armuña, with 411 inhabitants, which owes its name to Gómez Tello, entrusted by the kings of León with organising its settlement during the medieval resettlement; the now-deserted hamlets of Sordos, Hortelanos and Velasco Muñoz, within its municipal territory, were founded in the same process. It has a railway station on the line linking Medina del Campo with the Portuguese border crossing of Fuentes de Oñoro, opened in 1877, whose impetus made Gomecello the main population and economic centre of La Armuña. Its economy is still based on cereals and pulses. Two large grain silos make it recognisable from kilometres away, and along the road to Cabezabellosa remain the ruins of the deserted hamlet of Sordos.

Curiosity
Two great grain silos rise above the houses and make the village recognisable from many kilometres away; together with the church of Santiago Apóstol, they are the most characteristic profile of a settlement of the Armuña plain.

Historical milestone
The kings of León entrusted the organisation of settlement to one Gómez Tello, from whose name the place name derives, documented in the thirteenth century as Gomeçello. Within its municipal district the now deserted settlements of Sordos and Hortelanos were also founded.
