The Mudéjar church of San Miguel Arcángel Monument · Pitiegua, La Armuña, Salamanca The church of San Miguel Arcángel in Pitiegua stands to the north of the town centre; its original construction dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and followed Mudéjar lines, although successive renovations substantially altered its appearance. Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico, from 1849, already describes it as a parish church served by a cura de término. The Roman site of Nava Grande is also documented within the municipal boundary, evidence that the place was inhabited in Roman times before Pitiegua was founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages; centuries later, in November 1812, the Duke of Wellington lodged in the village during the Peninsular War.
