What to see and do in Aldearrubia

Aldearrubia
Village
Aldearrubia is a municipality in the comarca of Las Villas, in the province of Salamanca, founded during the repopulation the kings of León carried out in the area in the Middle Ages, when it was called Aldea Ruvia. With about 518 inhabitants, its main monument is the church of San Miguel Arcángel, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 1993: it preserves remains of its 9th-century fabric, although almost the whole building is from the 17th century, and it holds the Cristo de la Esperanza. Its festivals are la Ascensión, on 15 May, la Asunción, on 15 August, and San Miguel, on 29 September.
The church of San Miguel Arcángel
Monument
Declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) on 29 July 1993, it preserves remains of an original ninth-century fabric, although virtually all of the church seen today was built in the seventeenth century. Inside, the Cristo de la Esperanza is venerated.
The legend of the abandoned village of San Pedro
Curiosity
To the north of the municipal district stood the place of San Pedro, today deserted. Tradition tells that a plague killed all its residents except two sisters, to whom Aldearrubia refused help and San Morales gave shelter; the tale feeds a centuries-old rivalry.
The Concordia between two towns
Historical milestone
From the seventeenth century dates the document known as La Concordia, which recognised the rights of Aldearrubia and San Morales and established a friendly pact to respect the meadows and lands of each village, separated by barely a kilometre.
The festive cycle of Aldearrubia
Activity
The municipality's calendar spreads three celebrations across the year: the Ascension in May, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción on 15 August and San Miguel on 29 September, titular saint of the parish church declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC).
The riverside woodland of the Tormes in Aldearrubia
Nature
The 32.84 square kilometres of the municipal district are shared between the cereal-growing countryside and the bank of the Tormes, where poplar stands and willow beds accompany the river in the stretch where the remains of the old water mill of San Bricio can still be made out.
The 687 residents in Madoz's dictionary
Curiosity
In the mid-nineteenth century Pascual Madoz's Geographical-Statistical-Historical Dictionary counted 687 inhabitants in the town, more than it has today: the 2025 register records 518 households, testimony to the emptying of the Salamanca countryside.
