What to see and do in La Orbada

La Orbada
Village
La Orbada is a village in the Salamanca comarca of La Armuña that also includes the settlements of La Orbadilla and Villanueva de los Pavones, with 177 inhabitants in total; it lies 23 kilometres from Salamanca, on flat land crossed by the A-62 motorway. Founded by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, it was then called Lorvada and remained part of the kingdom of León until its integration into the province of Salamanca in 1833. On its hillside, in the early hours of 28 to 29 July 1936, Casto Prieto Carrasco, the first elected mayor of the city of Salamanca, was murdered, extrajudicially executed by Falangist soldiers in a ditch on the Valladolid-Salamanca road, today the N-620; alongside his remains were found those of the socialist deputy José Andrés y Manso.
The murder of Casto Prieto Carrasco
Historical milestone
On the hillside of this town, in the early hours between 28 and 29 July 1936, Casto Prieto Carrasco (Sequeros, 1886 - La Orbada, 29 July 1936) was murdered extrajudicially: a doctor, professor of Anatomy at the University of Salamanca and the leading figure of Salamancan republicanism during the Second Republic. He was mayor of Salamanca from December 1931 to October 1934 and again between February and July 1936, promoting the reform of municipal finances, the planned urban development of the city and the fight against unemployment through public works and the building of schools; he was murdered by the rebels for opposing the coup d'état, together with the socialist deputy José Andrés y Manso, in a ditch beside the Valladolid road.
