What to see and do in Aldeanueva de Figueroa

Aldeanueva de Figueroa
Village
Aldeanueva de Figueroa is a municipality in the comarca of La Armuña, in the province of Salamanca, with 238 inhabitants; its territory includes the deserted hamlets of Cabeza Barajas, Lagunas Rubias and Taragudo. It arose in the 14th century around a defensive watchtower built in the 12th-13th centuries as part of the border system of the kingdom of León, for which reason it was then called «Aldeanueva del Arçobispo»; the tower-belfry of its church was later built on top of that watchtower. Next to Lagunas Rubias, the remains of a castle from around 1200 are preserved, part of the same defensive system facing Castile. In 1826 the village had 589 inhabitants, and 708 in 1845, when it already had its own town council.
The church built on a watchtower
Monument
The village was born in the fourteenth century around a watchtower erected between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries to guard the eastern Leonese frontier; over that structure the church was built, which used the old defensive tower as its bell tower.
The castle of Lagunas Rubias
Monument
An archaeological site of a ruined medieval fortification, located west of the houses of the Lagunas Rubias estate, in the municipality of Aldeanueva de Figueroa (Salamanca), also known as El Palomar. It was built by the Kingdom of León in the 12th-13th centuries, using the technique of rammed rubble, or shuttered masonry, as part of the defensive system facing the Kingdom of Castile, and was extended over 73 years of dynastic wars between Castilian and Leonese monarchs and against Portugal and the Almohads. After the kingdoms of León and Castile were unified in 1230 under Ferdinand III, the fortification fell out of use and was abandoned. It has been protected since the 1949 decree and the 1985 heritage law.
