Arcediano
Village
Arcediano is a village in the comarca of La Armuña, in the province of Salamanca, situated 16 kilometres from the capital, in a landscape of cereal plains dotted with ponds and pools that favour the presence of birds. It takes its name from its owner and founder, the archdeacon Rozalino, of Galician origin, who built it up around 1120; founded by the kings of León, it was later ceded to the diocese of Salamanca as a cathedral lordship. It has about 96 inhabitants today, against 274 in the mid-19th century. Local tradition tells that the Roman emperor Hadrian camped here in the 1st century, on his way back from his campaign in Lusitania. Its Gothic church of San Miguel houses a plateresque gallery by Juan Negrete and a main chapel with shell-shaped squinches by Pedro de Lanestosa.
