What to see and do in Tamames

Tamames
Village
Tamames is a municipality in the Campo de Salamanca district, or Campo Charro, in the La Huebra sub-district, 55 km from the provincial capital; its municipal area, covering 60.69 km², includes the settlements of Avililla de la Sierra, Monte-Llen, Pedraza and Tamames, and totals 781 inhabitants (INE 2025). The town sits on the northern slope of the Sierra de Tamames, between the Huebra and Yeltes rivers, in a landscape of pastureland, holm-oak groves and oak woods. The earliest settlements date back to the Lower Palaeolithic; the Celtic people of the Vettones later settled here, of whom two granite heads are preserved. It preserves a 10th-century tower built on the orders of Ramiro II of León to guard the approaches to the Campo Charro, and the main chapel of its Church of the Assumption is the work of Gil de Hontañón.
Tower of Tamames
Monument
A defensive tower that tradition attributes to the tenth century and to the León king Ramiro II, raised to watch over the approaches to the Campo Charro from the outliers of the sierra; it is the oldest building preserved in the town.
Battle of Tamames
Historical milestone
The Battle of Tamames was fought on 18 October 1809 next to this town in Salamanca province, during the Peninsular War. The Duke del Parque, commanding the Army of the Left, faced the French general Jean Gabriel Marchand, who had marched out to meet him from Salamanca. The engagement began badly for the Spanish because of a clumsy manoeuvre by their cavalry, which lost a battery of seven guns later recovered at bayonet point by the infantry; the Spanish counterattack and the assault by the forces garrisoned in the village broke the French flank and forced Marchand to withdraw, one of the few Spanish victories in open field of the war: an eagle, cannon and ammunition wagons were captured, at a cost of seven hundred casualties of their own.
The Cowbells of Tamames
Curiosity
At the end of January the village children wake the neighbourhood at dawn by sounding cowbells through the streets, in two separate processions that compete with each other, one of the most singular winter customs of the sierra.
The magosto of Tamames
Food and drink
On 1 November the residents gather to roast chestnuts at the magosto of All Saints, a festival which, along with the cake of Easter Monday and the hornazo of the Lunes de Aguas, marks the village's gastronomic calendar.
