What to see and do in La Bastida

La Bastida
Village
La Bastida is a municipality of only 22 inhabitants spread over 18.5 square kilometres, in the Sierra de Francia comarca, Las Quilamas sub-comarca, province of Salamanca, not even reaching two residents per square kilometre. It became part of the alfoz of Miranda del Castañar after King Alfonso IX of León created it in 1213, during the medieval resettlement of the Sierra de Francia. In the mid-19th century it had 133 inhabitants, six times more than today, a decline that reflects the general depopulation of this Salamanca mountain comarca over the last century and a half.
Twenty-two residents and an unpaid mayor
Curiosity
With twenty-two inhabitants in the 2025 register, La Bastida is one of the least populated municipalities in the province; its mayor receives no payment whatsoever for the post, as the town council itself put on record.
