Puebla de Yeltes
Village
Puebla de Yeltes is a municipality of 136 inhabitants in the Campo de Yeltes, comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo, in the plain of the Salamanca Campo Charro, near the Peña de Francia and La Alberca. Founded during the medieval resettlement by the kings of León, it was placed within the Campo de Yeltes after the creation of the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo by Fernando II of León in the 12th century; there are remains of a bridge and a Roman causeway over the río Yeltes. Its church of the Degollación de San Juan Bautista preserves Mudéjar coffered ceiling work in the nave and around the apse. Over the río Chico the Puente Viejo spans two arches, built of slate and mortar, dated to between the end of the 12th century and the start of the 13th; the Puente Nuevo, with five arches, dates from 1898. The fiestas of San Gil are on 1 September.
