Battle of Tamames Historical milestone · Tamames, Campo de Salamanca, Salamanca Image of Tamames, not of the place itself. The Battle of Tamames was fought on 18 October 1809 next to this town in Salamanca province, during the Peninsular War. The Duke del Parque, commanding the Army of the Left, faced the French general Jean Gabriel Marchand, who had marched out to meet him from Salamanca. The engagement began badly for the Spanish because of a clumsy manoeuvre by their cavalry, which lost a battery of seven guns later recovered at bayonet point by the infantry; the Spanish counterattack and the assault by the forces garrisoned in the village broke the French flank and forced Marchand to withdraw, one of the few Spanish victories in open field of the war: an eagle, cannon and ammunition wagons were captured, at a cost of seven hundred casualties of their own. 18 de octubre de 1809 Photo: Alta Falisa (CC BY-SA 4.0) What to see and do in Tamames
