Abusejo
Village
Abusejo is a village of about 150 inhabitants in the province of Salamanca, in Castile and León, in the comarca of Ciudad Rodrigo and the sub-comarca of Campo de Yeltes, within the Campo Charro, with the municipal area covered in holm oak woods where acorn-fed pigs are fattened. For years it was held that it had been one of the fortresses that Sancho VII of Navarre handed over as security to Alfonso VIII of Castile in 1207, an error stemming from confusion with the town of Ausejo in La Rioja, since Abusejo belonged at the time to the Kingdom of León. Its founding dates back to the resettlement by the Leonese kings, and the first documentary reference is from 14 January 1174. In the past it made cheeses, wafers and barquillos and produced charcoal for half the province; its main fiesta is on the first Sunday of May.
