Caleruega
Village
Caleruega is a town in the province of Burgos (Castile and León), in the Ribera del Duero comarca, at the point of transition between the Sierra de la Demanda and the northern Meseta, and covered by the Ribera del Duero wine denomination of origin. Its name comes from the caleras, or lime kilns, of the surrounding mountains. Crossed by the Gromejón river, it lives mainly from farmland, along with small industries and livestock farming. With 385 inhabitants, it is the birthplace of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, founder of the Order of Preachers, and has ranked since 2017 among the most beautiful villages of Spain. It preserves the tower of the Guzmanes, the family that gave its name to the village's coat of arms, and the Romanesque parish church of San Sebastián, with its original tower.
