Santa María del Mercadillo
Village
Santa María del Mercadillo is a municipality in the Esgueva valley, in the province of Burgos, Ribera del Duero comarca, seat of the Mancomunidad de La Yecla. Of medieval origin, possibly as a monastery or a group of hermits, it grew up around a church that until a few years ago retained Romanesque details, and anthropomorphic early medieval tombs appeared on the village's upper threshing floors when the ground was levelled. Nearby run the streams of Nava-Perala and the Longar, and the village was once defended on the hill of the old cemetery. Like other settlements in the comarca, it arose around the 10th century, in the resettlement that followed Almanzor's campaigns, organized around the castle of Clunia, today Coruña del Conde. It has 119 inhabitants.
