Valdeande
Village
Valdeande is a municipality in the north of the Ribera del Duero comarca, in the province of Burgos, bathed by the Esgueva river and with 103 inhabitants. Within its territory lies the ancient Ciella, possibly one of the seventeen Vaccean cities, situated on the border with Arevacian territory and crossed by a Roman road that linked Clunia with the Arlanza river valley; crosses and stelae found later also point to a small Hispano-Visigothic community. During the Reconquest, the tower of its church formed part of the fortifications raised in the Esgueva valley, and local tradition attributes the founding of the village, then called Val de Fernández, to Count Gonzalo Fernández, father of Fernán González, whose castle atop the mountain was later destroyed by Almanzor; the first document mentioning Valdeande dates from 1037. Its church of San Pedro combines the late Romanesque of the portico, Gothic windows and a Renaissance altar atop a tower that may have been fortified in the 11th century, and its jotas are danced for the Virgen del Juncal.
