What to see and do in Arauzo de Salce

Arauzo de Salce
Village
Arauzo de Salce is a hamlet of 44 inhabitants located in the valley of the Aranzuelo, whose name has been documented since the Middle Ages, with varied spellings: it is cited in 1044, as Arabuzo de salze, in the Cartulario de San Pedro de Arlanza, and is mentioned again in 1202, 1250, 1272 and 1499 in documents relating to Silos and Caleruega. The surname “de Salce” alludes to the willow, a tree that gave its name to a stretch of willows cut down in the 14th century as harmful to health, and distinguishes this hamlet from neighbouring Arauzo de Miel and Arauzo de Torre. Some philologists trace the origin of the place name to the Basque language, with the root ara-, “valley”. The hamlet preserves a single-nave Romanesque church, with a centuries-old mulberry tree beside it, and celebrates Our Lady of Sorrows on 22 April.
