What to see and do in Serranillos

Serranillos
Village
Serranillos is a village in the province of Ávila, in the comarca of Burgohondo - El Tiemblo - Cebreros, with 247 inhabitants, situated at 1,220 metres of altitude. Its founding is dated to 1262, by mountain people who arrived from Burgos, Soria and La Rioja; it belonged first to the monastery of Santi-Espíritu of Ávila and later to the lordship of Arenas, and later still, after the death of Álvaro de Luna, John II of Castile handed it to his widow, Juana de Pimentel, before it joined the lordship of Mombeltrán, of which it was the last of the twelve villages to break away. Its mountain pass was a coveted route towards the south of Ávila, and on Easter Sunday it celebrates the feast of El Judas.
The mountain pass of Serranillos
Nature
The pass linking the upper Alberche with the Tiétar valley opens at 1,575 metres of altitude, in the heart of the Sierra de Gredos, amid pine forests, oak groves and chestnut groves, with high-altitude pastures and numerous springs. Its northern side is reached from the town of Serranillos, after an 18-kilometre climb with a 721-metre elevation gain; from the south, from San Esteban del Valle, via the puerto del Pico, with 16 kilometres and an 811-metre elevation gain. The pass gained great media attention in the 1983 Vuelta a España, when the Frenchman Bernard Hinault launched on its ramps the attack with which he eliminated his main rivals, especially Julián Gorospe, and sealed the race.
