What to see and do in San Esteban del Valle

San Esteban del Valle
Village
San Esteban del Valle is a town of about 735 inhabitants situated in the Barranco de las Cinco Villas, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, in the Ávila comarca of the Valle del Tiétar. It was the first town in the ravine to gain villazgo (town charter), granted by Charles II in 1693, followed by Villarejo del Valle in 1694 and Cuevas del Valle in 1695. It has two patron saints, San Esteban Protomártir and San Pedro Bautista, born in the village and crucified in Nagasaki among the 26 martyrs of Japan; his birth house became an ermita (chapel) in 1682. Presiding over the town, on a low hill, is the parish church of San Esteban, from the 15th century and Isabelline Gothic in style, with a single rectangular nave of two bays and three ribbed vaults.
Church of San Esteban Protomártir
Monument
An Isabelline Gothic church built between the late 15th century and the early 16th, with a single rectangular nave narrowed by a polygonal apse, three ribbed vaults and a 22-metre bell tower. It has a notable Renaissance portal and, inside, a hexagonal wrought-iron Plateresque pulpit and a screen of the same material separating the main chapel from the rest of the nave. It preserves the font where St Peter Baptist was baptized, one of the village's patron saints along with St Stephen. Belonging to the diocese of Ávila, it was declared a Monumento Histórico-Artístico (a former Spanish heritage-protection category, precursor to the BIC) by Royal Decree of 15 October 1982.
Hermitage of San Pedro Bautista
Monument
Raised in granite ashlar over the saint's birthplace, in the centre of the village, it was finished in 1682 with Neoclassical lines and a round-arched doorway. San Pedro Bautista died crucified in Nagasaki with the martyrs of Japan.
The independence of San Esteban del Valle
Historical milestone
Carlos II granted villa status to the place, the first in the ravine of the Cinco Villas to obtain it; Villarejo del Valle got it in 1694 and Cuevas del Valle in 1695. The residents had already tried without success in 1434.
