What to see and do in Navalosa

Navalosa
Village
Navalosa is a town in the province of Ávila situated in the Sierra de Gredos, in the valley of the upper Alberche, at 1304 metres above sea level and 59 kilometres from the provincial capital. In the mid-nineteenth century it had 515 inhabitants, against 314 today. It is well known for its cucurrumachos: during carnival, a small number of residents dress up as evil beings with hair and horn masks and go through the streets dancing and ringing cowbells, in a tradition of origin not precisely determined, which some authors link to livestock rites, to a Celtic substratum, or to the pre-Christian Galician festas do entroido.

Curiosity
At carnival, masked figures with hair-and-horn masks go through the village sounding cowbells. The masquerade, of disputed origin, is the mark of identity of this municipality at 1,304 metres of altitude on the upper Alberche.
