What to see and do in Hoyocasero

Hoyocasero
Village
Hoyocasero is a village of around 294 inhabitants in the valley of the upper Alberche, on the flank of the sierra of the same name, 55 kilometres from the Ávila provincial capital, with a mountainous landscape dotted with dehesas and pine woods. It has its origin in the Celtic culture of the Vettones, as shown by the burials around the ermita del Cristo, and in 2010 a rock-cut Iron Age altar with six carved steps was discovered, similar to the one at the castro de Ulaca. The first historical reference dates from 1090, a skirmish between the Moorish king of Badajoz and Alfonso VI over control of Toledo. Until 1795 it depended on the Abadía de Burgohondo, dissolved for its extreme laxity. It is also known for its Scots pine woodland, a refuge for more than four hundred plant species.

Nature
A Scots pine forest on the slopes south of Hoyocasero, home to more than four hundred higher plant species across three layers, and preserving Eurosiberian relict species and endemics not found anywhere else in the Sistema Central. It covers barely 150 hectares, crossed by the Pinar stream, which forms a peat bog before flowing into the Alberche; already in the 19th century few botanists travelling through central Spain failed to visit it, and the pharmacist and botanist Carlos Pau described it as the richest he knew in Spain. Among its roughly 500 species of vascular plants, the mountain artichoke and the Hoyocasero bramble were first described for science here, the latter taking its name from the village's old place name, Hoyoquesero.

Curiosity
In 2010 an Iron Age altar carved into the rock with six steps was located at this spot, comparable to those of the Vettonian castro of Ulaca. The first written mention of the village is of 1090.
