What to see and do in Gavilanes

Gavilanes
Village
Gavilanes is a settlement of about 523 inhabitants at 678 metres above sea level in the upper Tiétar, in the province of Ávila, where Iron Age hillforts and a necropolis of urns with weapons and ornaments have been found. Resettled around 1100 by the knight Blasco Jimeno el Grande, it appears named as Los Gavilanes in the Libro de la Montería of Alfonso XI, who ordered it repaired and resettled. In 1393 it was incorporated into the lordship of Mombeltrán, created to reward the nobleman Ruy Lope Dávalos, and later passed to the constable Álvaro de Luna and to the Duke of Alburquerque, in whose estate it remained until 1830. Its traditional cuisine preserves dishes such as cuchifrito de cabrito, asadurilla and rin-ran, a gazpacho of peppers and stale bread that reapers ate during their midday break.
The concord agreement of Gavilanes
Historical milestone
The agreement signed that year granted the place its own jurisdiction and enlarged its district, after three centuries within the lordship of Mombeltrán, which in 1393 passed to the constable of Castile and later to the dukes of Alburquerque.
The cortaíllos and the arrope (pumpkin syrup)
Food and drink
The local confectionery rests on the cortaíllos, aniseed biscuits, on the honey hornazo and on arrope, a thick pumpkin sweet. In the stews the kid cuchifrito, the offal and the migas with chorizo hold sway.
