What to see and do in Villanueva de Ávila

Villanueva de Ávila
Village
Villanueva de Ávila is a settlement of around 202 inhabitants in the valley of the Alto Alberche, famous for its scattered neighbourhoods of one-room stone houses with an attached stable, which form a traditional architectural ensemble currently being processed for declaration as Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). These neighbourhoods once depended on Navatalgordo and were known as the Umbrías de Navatalgordo; the settlement of Los Arroyuelos, where the first schools were built in 1933, grew until it was called Pueblo Nuevo and took the name Villanueva de Ávila in 1942, only becoming independent from Navatalgordo in 1991. On 23 July 1809, Napoleonic troops bayoneted to death 22 women, among them the sisters of Juan Martín el Empecinado, at the site of Los Veneros.

The municipality has no compact centre but several scattered quarters of traditional stone and timber architecture. On 18 March 2024 the Junta opened proceedings to declare them a Bien de Interés Cultural of ethnological character.
The massacre of Los Veneros
Historical milestone
French troops murdered twenty-two women at the spot of Los Veneros, according to tradition because of their kinship with supporters of Juan Martín el Empecinado. The municipality took its present name in 1942.
