What to see and do in Burgohondo

Burgohondo
Village
Burgohondo is a town in the valley of the Alto Alberche, between the Sierra de Gredos and the Sierra de la Paramera, in the province of Ávila, with a population of around 1270 inhabitants. The Alberche river, with bathing spots such as the Puente del Arco or the Tabla de los Abades, is much frequented in winter and spring by canoeists and anglers. The repopulation of these lands began after the capture of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1085, with people arriving from the north who went on building hermitages, churches and monasteries beside the new settlements. From that medieval period dates the collegiate abbey of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, of Augustinian canons, which preserves a Romanesque chevet and a sixteenth-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling and has been a historic-artistic monument since 1983.
Abbey of Our Lady of the Assumption
Monument
Founded at the end of the 11th century by Augustinian canons and confirmed to the bishop of Ávila in 1178, it preserves Romanesque elements and a 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling. The abbey was suppressed in 1819 and the church has been a monument since 1983.
Hermitage of los Judíos
Monument
A small church that tradition links to the Jewish presence in the villa and which preserves 16th-century mural paintings with scenes of the Passion. It is, along with the abbey, the most singular artistic piece of the town centre.
The Alberche as it passes by the abbey
Activity
The river runs seven kilometres through the district, at 847 metres of altitude, and allows canoeing and trout fishing. From the village there also set out paths that climb towards La Paramera and towards the foothills of Gredos.
The land grant privilege of Burgohondo
Historical milestone
Alfonso X granted the abbey and its settlers a privilege that fixed the farmland of the valley, the legal basis of the settlement throughout the Middle Ages until the suppression of the abbey in 1819.
