What to see and do in Villamuelas

Villamuelas
Village
Villamuelas is a municipality in the comarca of Mesa de Ocaña, in the province of Toledo, with 587 inhabitants (INE 2025), set on a hill with a flat summit that explains its place name, from the Latin mola. Documented since the 12th century, when it absorbed the depopulated hamlet of Cerva Longa, in 1284 the cleric Domingo Pérez is already recorded at its church. It belonged to the archbishopric of Toledo until Philip II sold it in 1583 to Álvaro de Alcocer; in 1521, during the revolt of the Comunidades of Castile, the town sided with the comunero faction, which brought it reprisals. It preserves the parish church of Santa María Magdalena and the Casa Grande, a grand traditional Castilian house, and closes its winter festivities with the burial of the sardine.
Church of Santa María Magdalena de Villamuelas
Monument
The church of Santa María Magdalena of Villamuelas is the municipality's parish temple, rectangular in plan and with a single nave, built with contributions from the local residents themselves, with the architect's name not preserved. It has two side doors below the choir, a baptismal chapel at the foot of the nave, and a chancel formed by a widening of the nave with a small apse crowned by a dome; it was renovated in 2004. Its archive, with documentation from the late 16th century onward, preserves sacramental registers of baptism, marriage and death, along with fabric, confraternity and souls' books.
Great House of Villamuelas
Monument
A large traditional Castilian house, one of the few historic civic buildings preserved in the municipality.
Mola, the hill with a flat summit
Curiosity
The place name derives from the Latin mola, which denotes a steep hill with a small flat top, a description that matches the village's setting on the Mesa de Ocaña.
The 1583 sale of Villamuelas
Curiosity
The town belonged to the archbishopric of Toledo from the time of Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada until 1583, when Felipe II sold it to Álvaro de Alcocer. In the 12th century it had absorbed the deserted farmstead of Cerva Longa.
The widow potatoes of Villamuelas
Curiosity
Patatas viudas are a traditional peasant dish from Villamuelas, in the Mesa de Ocaña district (Toledo). They are made with potatoes, oil, pepper and paprika, water, crushed garlic and parsley, with no other accompaniment, hence their name (widowed potatoes). They form part of a local repertoire that also includes migas, gachas, almohadillas and rabbit with potatoes.
Burial of the Sardine of Villamuelas
Activity
A carnival tradition that closes the town's winter festivities with a mock funeral parade through its streets.
Festivities of el Cristo del Gran Poder
Activity
The festival of the Cristo del Gran Poder, Villamuelas's main celebration (Mesa de Ocaña, Toledo), is held on the last weekend of April. According to local tradition, it originated in a period of drought during which residents brought out a forgotten image of Christ, after which it immediately began to rain; ever since, this event has been commemorated every year in honour of the village's patron.
