Monument
A fortress of Muslim origin built in the 10th century under Umayyad rule, three kilometres east of Mora, in the region of La Mancha de Toledo. It was a strategic frontier stronghold during the Reconquista and, after the Christian conquest, was rebuilt and adapted to new military needs. Today it survives in ruins: remains of the walls, the keep and several cisterns are still standing. In 2020 it was included on the Lista Roja del Patrimonio (a list of heritage sites at risk) due to the danger of collapse, and public access is limited to the areas considered safe.
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de Altagracia in Mora was rebuilt in the 16th century after the tragic events of 1521, when, during the War of the Comunidades, more than three thousand people died inside it during the siege of the town by royalist troops. Today it remains the parish church dedicated to the town's patroness and the main religious monument of the municipality.
Monument
The Casa Consistorial de Mora is the town hall of this municipality in the region of La Mancha de Toledo, located on the Plaza de la Constitución. Built in neo-Mudéjar style, it has Semitic-influenced ornamentation on its windows, making it one of the most characteristic civil buildings in Mora's urban centre.
Nature
The municipal area of Mora, with mostly hilly terrain, is crossed by the Algodor river and borders to the south on the Finisterre reservoir. The Algodor rises at the Navajo lagoon, at an altitude of 822 metres, in Retuerta del Bullaque, within the Montes de Toledo, and runs for 102 kilometres through a basin of 1,250 km² before flowing into the Tagus near Aranjuez. The Finisterre reservoir, built in 1977 between the municipalities of Tembleque, Mora, Villanueva de Bogas and Turleque, holds 133 cubic hectometres and marks the southern boundary of the municipality.
Curiosity
The castle of Mora (Toledo) rebelled in the year 927 against the caliph Abderramán III, who personally subdued the stronghold, in one of the oldest documented episodes in the town's history. The fortress, of relative strategic importance as a frontier stronghold during the Reconquista, survives today in a ruinous state.
Curiosity
On 23 April 1521, during the revolt of the Comunidades, more than three thousand residents of Mora of all ages and sexes died when the parish church in which they had taken refuge was set on fire, after being besieged by royalist troops. The people of Mora had fought with notable courage on the Comunero side against Toledo, and were trapped when their attackers set fire to the church that served as their refuge.
Activity
The Fiesta del Olivo of Mora is held on the last weekend of April, in the region of La Mancha de Toledo, and pays tribute to olive growers and the olive harvest, with more than sixty years of history and a declaration of tourist interest. Alongside competitions, tastings and educational activities devoted to olive oil, its parade of decorated floats and carts stands out, one of the most popular events in the town and a sign of Mora's strong identification with olive growing and oil production.
Activity
Feria Grande de Mora, the town's main festival in honour of the Cristo de la Vera-Cruz, held from 14 to 20 September. The same invocation gives its name to the local ermita dedicated to the Cristo de la Vera Cruz.
Food and drink
Slow sofrito of tomato, pepper and courgette in abundant olive oil of the municipality, which is preserved in jars for the whole year and served on its own, with egg or with loin from the jar. It is the dish that best sums up the larder of the comarca.
