What to see and do in Villanueva de Bogas

Villanueva de Bogas
Village
Villanueva de Bogas is a municipality in the comarca of La Mancha de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, whose name may derive from the Latin buda, "bulrush", a plant that grows on the banks of the nearby río Algodor, or from the Basque muga, "boundary marker". It is documented in 1199, when Alfonso VIII and his wife Eleanor gave the settlement to Gonzalo de Mesa, and it was refounded at its present site in 1213 by the archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada; it was administratively dependent on La Guardia until Philip II granted it the title of town in 1590. Its main monument is the parish church of Santa Ana, from the 18th century, and the southeastern Way of St James route passes through its municipal area, marked by a commemorative milestone. It came to exceed 1,250 inhabitants in 1950; today it has 657.

Monument
Eighteenth-century parish church, the main monument of this small municipality in the south-east of the province of Toledo, dedicated to Saint Anne, patron saint of the town. Monument
A landmark erected in the town in memory of the passage through its municipal district of the south-eastern Camino de Santiago, which links the Levante with Toledo.
The donation of Alfonso VIII
Curiosity
The town appears in 1199, when Alfonso VIII and his wife Leonor granted it away. It was refounded on its present site in 1213 by Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada and obtained the title of villa in 1590, under Felipe II.
The 1950 population peak
Curiosity
Villanueva de Bogas (Toledo) reached its peak population in 1950, with 1,254 inhabitants, having grown from the mere 304 residents it had in 1849. Since the mid-twentieth century the population has not stopped declining: the 2025 census records 657 inhabitants, little more than half the number at the municipality's moment of greatest strength.
