What to see and do in Mascaraque

Mascaraque
Village
Mascaraque is a municipality in the comarca of Montes de Toledo, in the province of Toledo, with 441 inhabitants (INE 2025), on a plain with low hills, at an average altitude of 700 to 720 metres. Its name, of probable Celtic root with Arabic influence, could mean 'black, dark'. The origin of the town goes back to Arab rule, a period in which the 14th-century castle was built that in 1518 would become the Casa Fuerte-Palacio of Juan de Padilla. Its coat of arms bears the motto NO TEMIERON in memory of the village's refusal to hand over supplies to Carlist bands, and it preserves the castle of the Padilla family and the hermitage of los Cristos, restored as a museum space dedicated to the Renaissance painter Juan Correa de Vivar, born in the locality.
Castle of Mascaraque
Monument
Fortified house and palace of the Padilla family built in the 14th century, combining a defensive function with that of a seigneurial residence, next to the parish church of Mascaraque. Of Islamic origin, it retains a keep at the north-west corner with three carved Seals of Solomon, three circular towers at the corners and rubble-stone walls with ashlar. Rebuilt between 1980 and 1985 by José Manuel Sierra Frade after centuries of neglect, it recovered its medieval appearance using stone from the quarries of Las Ventas con Peña Aguilera. It later belonged to the Dukes of Abrantes and to the Marquis of Navamorcuende. Also known as the castle of Juan de Padilla, it still retains vaults of Moorish tradition and the appearance it must have had in the 15th century.

Curiosity
During the First Carlist War the village refused to hand over supplies to the Carlist bands, an event recalled by the motto NO TEMIERON, they did not fear, on its municipal coat of arms.
Hermitage of los Cristos y museo de Juan Correa de Vivar
Monument
A restored hermitage housing a museum space dedicated to the Renaissance painter Juan Correa de Vivar, a native of the town. Correa de Vivar was born around 1510 in Mascaraque, where his family owned a house and lands, although he always resided in Toledo, the city where he trained in the workshop of Juan de Borgoña and developed his career. He never married and, being a religious man, left his soul as heir to his estate, devoting it to works of charity, masses and the founding of a chaplaincy perpetuated in the church of Mascaraque, whose first beneficiary was his nephew Rodrigo de Vivar. He died in Toledo on 16 April 1566 and, as he had directed, was buried in Mascaraque, in the same tomb as his parents.
