What to see and do in Huerta de Valdecarábanos

Huerta de Valdecarábanos
Village
Huerta de Valdecarábanos is a municipality in the comarca of Mesa de Ocaña (Toledo), with 1,836 inhabitants (INE 2025), located on the southern flank of a sierra and originating in the Mozarabic resettlement that Alfonso VII promoted in this spot in 1154. Once the territory had been handed over to the Order of Calatrava, the order built, at the end of the 12th century, on a dominant hill, the castle of la Huerta, hexagonal in plan, which survived until the 16th century, when the Talavera nobleman Álvaro de Loaysa bought it and dismantled it; today it is a ruin, part of whose stones were used to build the municipal cemetery. It also preserves the hermitage of the Virgen del Rosario de Pastores, a Modernist work from 1910, and its municipal area grew enough hemp in the 19th century to sustain a trade of its own.
Castle of la Huerta
Monument
The ruins of the hexagonal fortress that the Order of Calatrava built on a hill in the late 12th century and which stood until it fell into ruin in the 18th century.
Hermitage of la Virgen del Rosario de Pastores
Monument
The hermitage of the Virgen del Rosario de Pastores, in Huerta de Valdecarábanos, was inaugurated on 16 November 1910, designed and built by the architect Jesús Carrasco-Muñoz y Encina. It follows the Art Nouveau style prevalent at the time, both in its architecture and decoration, combined with elements recalling the Romanesque and Gothic, such as the buttresses and pinnacle, or the Byzantine, such as its dome. With a rectangular floor plan and a single nave divided into five bays with groin vaults, it preserves an interior frieze with floral decoration and medallions depicting the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. In the main chapel stand the altarpiece and the camarín of the Virgen del Rosario de Pastores, and on the Epistle side lie the remains of the donors who funded the church.
The Mozarab Resettlement of 1154
Curiosity
After the Reconquista, in 1154 Alfonso VII granted land in this area to Mozarabs from Málaga to resettle it, giving rise to the present-day municipality of Huerta de Valdecarábanos. At the end of the 12th century the territory passed to the Order of Calatrava, whose knights built the castle of la Huerta on a dominant hill, possibly making use of earlier Muslim structures. The fortress remained under its control until 1538, when the Talavera-born nobleman Álvaro de Loaysa bought the commandery and dismantled the castle.
Festivities of San Nicolás de Bari
Activity
Celebration in honor of Saint Nicholas of Bari, patron saint of Huerta de Valdecarábanos (Mesa de Ocaña district, Toledo), whose feast day is commemorated on 6 December. It closes the local festive calendar, marking the end of the municipality's cycle of festivities before the arrival of winter.
The sale of the town to Álvaro de Loaysa
Historical milestone
Carlos I sold the town in the sixteenth century to don Álvaro de Loaysa, of a Talavera family, with which the place passed from the Order of Calatrava to a private seigneury. The hexagonal Calatravan castle was dismantled in those same decades.
The hemp trade
Historical milestone
Besides wheat, barley, grapes and olives, the municipal district grew hemp in quantity sufficient to sustain a trade of its own in the nineteenth century, served by the town's muleteers. From that fibre came ropes, espadrilles and harness for the whole comarca.
